From deskfast to lunchbox: taking lunch from home is the new trend

Just a few days ago, we read about the surge in the consumption of single food portions , a trend dictated by changes at a social level, such as the growth of single-component households, but also by the increasing need to pay attention to what and how much we eat.

Although the lunch break is recognized by many workers as an important stop during the day, perfect for enjoying an hour off with colleagues and socializing before going back to work, many statistics indicate a strong increase in those who choose to eat lunch at their desk, bringing lunch from home (hence the English-speaking term deskfast referring to a late morning breakfast or lunch), in order to save some time to get out of work earlier.

A phenomenon partly related to the boom of single-portions food is, in fact, the rediscovery of the lunchbox. A tradition we are very fond of: known in the North of Italy since the 1950s, the lunchbox was originally a small round pot with an airtight seal: do you want to know what material it was made of? Aluminum, of course! The original patent was filed in 1952 by Renato Caimi and his brother Mario, owners of the Pentolux industry in Nova Milanese.

The lunchbox was used by workers and students to bring a packed lunch to work or school, and immediately became an object of desire because it allowed to carry complex foods, such as pasta, rice or a main course, due to the possibility to heat up.

No longer just sandwiches but a real and easy meal. Since the 2000s, the lunchbox has returned to the spotlight, for different needs: on one hand, economic savings and on the other, the chance to control what you eat, which is fundamental especially for those who follow a particular diet or those who have needs due of intolerances or allergies.

What if there was a way to enrich the lunchbox with sauces and single-portion condiments to make the food even tastier by paying attention to environmental sustainability? Let’s take a very practical example: those who during a diet want to take a plate of vegetables or a salad to work.

There are numerous ready-to-eat packs available on the market: many of them are in plastic containers with single-portion sachets dressing which, once opened, splash here and there, oiling hands with the risk of dirtying the desk. Not to mention the waste!

In the latest decade Japanese bento mania has also exploded in the West. Bento are colorful and super functional containers used in Japan to prepare lunchbox or bringing snack in a very creative way.

They are useful to prepare multi-containers lunchbox suitable for hosting different foods, for example, varieties of sushi. They are designed to contain a full meal for one person and are a must (have lo toglierei…)  in any self-respecting kitchen! You must have seen them in some Japanese anime!

Children lunchbox: healthy, practical and sustainable

Above all, there is an area where lunchbox is also taking on an educational role: the lunchbox for children and teenagers who go to school. Bringing a snack or lunch from home can be a burden, but for many mothers it is a good way to check that their children do not exceed in the consumption of sugars or unhealthy packaged snacks.

 Italian Government supports this kinds of initiatives: in recent months, a draft law has been presented to the Italian Chamber of Deputies Commission for Social Affairs, which has the primary objective of promoting a more conscious food education “with particular regard to children and teenagers, by encouraging the offer of healthy food and drinks through vending machines located in public places”.

A healthy and balanced snack, for example, could be a slice of bread with jam or chocolate and hazelnut cream.
