Over 90 years of Packaging history

1934

The beginning of the adventure. The Favia tube factory is born.

In Bari, Michele Favia is in charge of buying tubes to contain creams and toothpastes. Gained experience in the field, he decided to move to Milan with his family and start his own company.

His name and signature are, in fact, the first Tubettificio logo: a symbol that has its roots in 1934 and still represents a philosophy that united three generations of entrepreneurs.

In June, the company began to set up in a rented warehouse in Milan, in Via Pisacane, a street that already existed in the second half of the 19th century in a suburban area of the city. It was in one of these warehouses that the story of Tubettificio M. Favia began.

1934

1940

Second World War. A dramatic period for the company.

On the outbreak of the war, the company bets on progress and production. There were now two warehouses and the generated profits were used to improve the technology and the quality. The daily production reached 80.000 units.

Despite this scenario, the war casts its desolate shadow: bombings make people’s daily lives very difficult; lead and tin becomes precious materials, both for the war industry and for tube production.

1943 was the darkest and most tragic year for the company: bombings on 8 and 15 August destroyed the company’s two warehouses, leaving debris and memories behind them.

1940

1950-1970

A period of growth. In the background, important social changes.

Despite the difficulties of the post-war period, there is a climate of renewed confidence in Italy. The company is back in business and slowly begins to grow again. In June 1957, it moved to a larger factory in Cernusco sul Naviglio. The change of location was followed by the introduction of an important innovation: from tin and tin-plated lead they switched to the processing of aluminium. As well as saving money, the new metal allowed production to be increased from 2000 to over 7000 pieces per hour. Production steps were progressively automated. But 1968 saw the beginning of a period marked by strikes and demonstrations. Despite the tensions and the first oil crisis, the company did not stop its development and consolidation, thanks to the far-sighted leadership of the Favia family. During this period, production became increasingly oriented towards the pharmaceutical market, which allocated around 90% of the aluminium tubes’ production.

1950-1970

1970 - 1990

The consolidation in Pharma. The new plant in Cernusco.

Production is increasingly oriented towards the pharmaceutical market, which allocates around 90 per cent of aluminium tube production.

In order to continue to grow, Tubettificio builts a new facility in the industrial area of Cernusco sul Naviglio that offers better working conditions and more suitable space for development. Fifty years after the start of operations, it is a turning point for the company, a new beginning and a further challenge.

1970 - 1990

The Tubettificio at the turn of two millennia. Consolidation, culture and new innovative thrusts.

The Tubettificio is now internationally recognised as one of the most important benchmarks in pharmaceutical packaging. But in recent years comes a new innovative push: informatization. The Tubettificio strengthened its IT systems, inaugurated its website and introduced a new reserved area dedicated to customers to make dialogue and updates on orders and shipments even more efficient.

2010-2022

Social commitment and awards.

These years saw the arrival of several innovations, such as the soft-tip ophthalmic tube and ToBeNaturAL, the tube with a compostable cap.

The deep connection with the territory leads to initiatives supporting events for the dissemination of technical-scientific culture, in collaboration with prestigious realities such as the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, and Consorzio Cial, the Italian consortium for the recovery and recycling of aluminium packaging. Between 2016 and 2019, it also participated as a case-study company in the Palestre delle Professioni Digitali (Digital Professions Gymnasium), an Accenture Foundation initiative for the dissemination of digital skills among young graduates in the humanities. The Tubettificio has also collected numerous awards in recent years: the Packaging Oscar for Technological Innovation (in two consecutive editions, in 2015 and 2016, for the soft ophthalmic nozzle and digital printing on tubes) and, in 2017, the WPO Worldstar Award 2017 for the dual category ‘medical and pharmaceutical’ and ‘health and beauty’.
